TERRY-FOX PARK ICE RINK

Design and construction of a covered and refrigerated outdoor ice rink

Description

Located near the Multifunctional Center of Saint-Apollinaire, this design-build project of a refrigerated outdoor skating rink aims to offer the citizens of the Municipality a surface protected from bad weather for the four seasons.

This rink, with National Hockey League dimensions, is operational from November to March thanks to its refrigeration system and its cover. During the other three seasons, the surface is used as a dek hockey or basketball court. This layout also includes benches for the players, bleachers and a service enclosure for the refrigeration system.

The architectural concept is developed around a large roof with a hybrid frame of wood and steel. This glue-laminated wood structure with a steel tensioning system allows a free span of 26 meters despite a relatively low thickness. This wooden roof rests on a wooden colonnade made up of turned posts 300 mm in diameter having an angle in two directions and extending on either side of the playing surface. The north-eastern part of the roof also houses the outdoor space dedicated to the refrigeration system.
