Gabrielle-Roy Library

Major renovation and expansion

Description

Major renovation and expansion project for the Gabrielle-Roy Library, located in the heart of the St-Roch district in Quebec City.

This four-storey building, made of concrete and steel, stands out greatly for the place it occupies in the urban life of Quebec City. The architecture of this building was therefore designed to integrate perfectly into the surrounding community, in addition to benefiting users. Thus, a generous forecourt and a public square have been integrated into the outdoor spaces.

The interior spaces integrate multiple functionalities for the users: collection and animation spaces (levels 02 and 04), spaces for creation and dissemination (levels 03), a series of terraces unfolding in steps between levels 04 and 05, etc.

In a first phase of the work, our team carried out the demolition work on the existing concrete structure. A particular attention had to be paid so that everything blends in well with the future spaces planned for the expansion of the building. Special precautions were required to provide temporary structural shoring for safe demolition that does not interfere with other work.

Since the work was taking place in a very busy area (urban bus, cars and pedestrian traffic), safety within the site is a major issue.
